This talk will discuss how the tools available in Cabri shape what students can do and consequently how they come to understand geometry. In many circumstances the Cabri tools empower students to explore, conjecture and 'see' new geometrical relationships. In others though, the fact that the Cabri tools cannot be customised by the students for their own goals can lead to an impasse -- the students know what they want to do but cannot do it! These two situations will be illustrated by considering students’ work with Cabri and the implications for classroom practice will be discussed.
